What to expect

The creative spirit of Limpopo is an unparalleled mix of vibrant artistry that blends the different shades of Tsonga, Venda and Shangaan cultures in the province. The Ribola Art Route invites you to experience the wondrous showcase of the community’s expressiveness and talent.

This one-day experience includes a lesson from Ma Florence about the long history of textiles in the community ranging from colourful cloths, pillowcases and traditional clothing, and a chance to learn the art of textile design in an interactive lesson. Then at Mukondeni Pot Village, Sarah Munyai, who has taught the women of the village to make clay pots in the age-old fire pit tradition, will teach you how to make pots, platters, vases, and water filters decorated with traditional patterns and symbols using ochre and graphite collected from the Luonde Mountains. What you make will be yours to take home. After lunch at a roadside restaurant, either visit the home gallery of Patrick Manyike to learn how to carve from this master sculptor OR the jewellery workshop of Phyllis Movani, where you’ll make your own unique jewellery and traditional Tsonga dolls to take home as souvenirs.

Finally, head to Shiluvari Lakeside Lodge on a scenic ride marked by spectacular views of the mountains. At the Albassini Dam you’ll set off on a sunset cruise. Samson Mulaudzi, your guide is knowledgable in both wildlife and birdlife. Further upstream you’ll come across hippo and will enjoy sundowners and snacks to the resounding call of fish eagles. Sundowners will be followed by dinner at the lodge and an overnight stay with a local family.
